NBO attends English Heritage consultation

English Heritage recently hosted a consultation with representatives of religions more recently arrived in the UK. Often taking over historic buildings, Buddhist and other faith communities are effectively taking care of these buildings for the nation. EH wanted to understand our practical and financial needs in maintaining and conserving these buildings and putting them to modern use.

Perhaps the most notable fact was that the relevant conservation grants are all funnelled through the Heritage Lottery Fund, which thus excludes many faith groups opposed to gambling.

Visit the blog for the associated survey of Buddhist buildings in England.

Three English Heritage handouts from the day:

What does EH do?
Funding research into places of worship
New uses for former church buildings
