A short biography of Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo
Born in London, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo left England at the age of twenty for India, and worked as an English teacher with Tibetan refugees. There in 1964 she met her Tibetan master, His Eminence Khamtrul Rinpoche of the Drukpa Kagyupa Lineage.
Soon she got ordained and was one of the first Westerners to become a nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
After studying for several years with her teacher, she was sent to the Himalayan valley of Lahaul to undertake more intensive practices. For another six years, Jetsunma practiced in a small monastery.
Seeking more seclusion and better conditions to meditate, Jetsunma found a cave where she stayed for twelve years in retreat.
She left India in 1988 and went to live in Italy, where she taught at various Dharma centres and monasteries. In 2001 Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo went back to India to fulfill the wish of her teacher to construct a nunnery for young women from the Himalayan region.
She was given the title of Jetsunma, which means Venerable Master, by His Holiness the Twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa, Head of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage on his birthday 16th February 2008.
Now, in 2008, the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery near Tashi Jong is almost finished. The temple is being constructed and there are about 60 nuns studying, practicing and meditating there. Five of them have started a long-term retreat.

SUMMER SESSHIN FRANCE JULY 14-18
Sesshin, from setsu-shin, is a Japanese term meaning to be in touch with and transmit the heart (shin). A sesshin is a period of intensive spiritual practice. Spiritual practice is to dwell in the presence of the Unconditioned. Whether one retires from the world as a hermit saint or goes forth into the midst of society for the benefit of all sentient beings, one's ground, as a practitioner, is always ultimately the sacred power of love. Buddhas call this the divine resort (Brahma Vihara). It can be recognised by followers of any serious spiritual path.
In this sesshin all can together practise insight, tranquil abiding and invocation in a variety of ways. Instruction will be given in basic spiritual exercises and there ill be extended periods of practice, much of it in silence. We can reflect upon our nature, imbibe the power of peace, and deepen our spiritual sense. This retreat is for seekers of any tradition devoted to universal love, compassion and peace.
SUMMER TEACHINGS JULY 20-24
A series of talks on the basic principles of spiritual life with a particular focus upon the ethical precepts as a description of the Buddhakaya. Dharmavidya's teachings spring from the wisdom of the Pureland Buddhist tradition that advances high ideals while recognising the vulnerable character of human nature. the dynamic of Pureland teaching arises from the contrast between personal and buddha natures, this world and the Pure Land. For those wishing to embark upon a spiritual life or deepen their practice in everyday affairs these questions have important practical implications. How much responsibility can a conditioned being have? What is it possible to change and what is outside of one's control? Thinking about socially engaged Buddhism, how do Buddhist ethics apply to social issues? What can we do collectively or as individuals given the scale of contemporary world problems? In thsi week there will be Dharma presenttions, group discussions and exercises to investigate these issues. Previous workshops of this kind have contributed significantly to participants' choice of direction in life and to the evolution of the sangha community.
Costs for both events:
Suggested donation 15-30 euros per day.
Accommodation between 20-30 euroos per day.
BUDDHIST PSYCHOLOGY SUMMER SCHOOL August 3 - 10
An opportunity to join with staff and students from the Amida Psychotherapy Training Programme for five days of workshops, lectures and experiential sessions in the French countryside. This event will provide an excellent introduction for those interested in the topic who have no prior experience, as well as offering regular students a chance to gain course credits in a different setting to that of our regular course blocks in the UK. It will give space for the exploration of the application of Buddhist psychology in therapeutic contexts, both in general terms, and in terms of developing specific other-centred skills. For existing students it will provide consolidation of learning gained from other courses, as well as providing time to relax together and get to know each other in new ways : pleasant atmosphere of the Amida centre. The structure of the day will be negotiable with the group but will probably consist of morning and evening formal learning sessions, with afternoons free for walking, swimming or conversation. There will be opportunities to join Buddhist practice at the centre, and participants may want to extend their stay to join one of our other programmes. Recommended pre-reading for participants: David Brazier's Zen Therapy and Caroline Brazier's Buddhist Psychology. Note that this event will include personal sharing as well as theoretical discussion. This event carries half credit for registered students.
Total Cost for BP summer school : 300/£200 for public 200/£125 for all registered students
ACCOMMODATION between 20 - 50 per day per person |

Sakyadhita UK International Association of Buddhist Women: 'Calling a Council of Buddhist Women'
10 – 4 Saturday July 11th 2009 Sukhavati, 21 Sussex Way, Finsbury Park London N7 6RT (Google journey planner)
Sister Modgala of the Amida Trust and Beatrice Jutta Gassner, one of the Founder Members of Sakyadhita UK, would like to introduce Sakyadhita and invite you to a
'Council of Buddhist Women' with the aim to explore ways of mutual benefit in working together on an international and national level. Non-buddhist women who are sympathetic friends are also welcome. Sakyadhita means 'Daughters of the Buddha' -
- What does this mean for our spiritual practice and our lifes as buddhist women?
- 'Sitting in Council' involves sitting in a circle exploring issues that are meaningful and relevant to us. A 'talking object' is passed around, giving each person the opportunity to listen and speak from the heart. In this way we can not only hear the spoken words but that which emerges in the spaces between them, as well as the quiet voice within the stillness of our own hearts.
- Following from that we can look at ways of working together and supporting each other. There is the aspect of being nourished, but also to gently go beyond our comfort zone in an environment that is safe enough. From sharing our stories we will follow the threads that are emerging – weaving them together creatively. There will also be time for reflection, meditation and chanting.
- The weekend will be led by Beatrice Jutta Gassner, a practicing Buddhist in the Soto Zen and the Tibetan traditions who also draws from years of experience as a group facilitator and Sister Modgala who has been a Pureland Buddhist teacher for over ten years and worked as a nun in Zambia, Bosnia, India, France as well as in the UK.
- Please let us know if you are intending to come, and bring some vegetarian food for a shared lunch. We do not charge for this event, but please consider making a donation according to your means to help the work of Sakyadhita and the Amida Trust to continue. Thankyou!

Amida Trust ~ London. Events Calendar, 2009 ~ 10
Time: 10am – 4pm Venue: Sukhavati, Finsbury Park, London N7 6RT (Click for Google Maps link)
2009
Saturday 30th May – Opening our hearts
We call Namo Amida Bu. What does this mean? At a simple level it means opening our heart to all that is measureless. How does this opening up help us in our daily lives and enable us to face the realities of life and find measureless and creative responses? These questions and more will be with us as we reflect and share.
Sunday 21st June- Disappointment
How can we not only live with disappointment but also come to appreciate it as part of our spiritual growth? Things all so often do not work out as we planned and frustration can overwhelm us. In this retreat we will explore our reactions and see that often the initial disappointment has led to new doors opening in our lives. But first we have to live with the feelings that come up and face reality.
Saturday 25th July – Joy
Holidays are here again. Time out from the rat race, time to relax and explore, to taste again the sights and sounds of childhood. This retreat is a preparation for truly enjoying this beautiful world as we find some time to appreciate its wonders. We will explore each of the senses and perhaps start to re-appreciate the world around us in different ways.
Saturday 8th August - Expectations
Good and bad, our expectations can cloud our perceptions and blind us to the truth. With success and failure we can be confused and not respond to situations as we would wish. Some might say that all expectations are dangerous things, more dangerous in fact than hopes and fears as we prejudge situations. This retreat will help us start to learn what particular expectations limit us and show us the way beyond.
Saturday 12th September - Introduction to Buddhist Psychology -
Many forces shape our lives and the way we respond to these affects our actions. In this retreat we will start to look at our lives through the window of Buddhist Psychology and hopefully find some keys to the self we have developed to protect ourselves from the winds that blow around us and within us – the “self” which inhibits us from leading full and meaningful lives that are beyond hurt and fear.
Thursday 8th October - Karma - All our actions have consequences.
This is a very simple explanation of karma. Some may think about how our actions in this world affect us in another world. However in this retreat we will look at how our day to day actions have consequences. We will look at these actions in the light of our own histories and in the history of our families and communities. We are not alone and we are all affected by the stories. In our sharing more understanding can arise and we can go beyond the stories that limit us, and find stories that inspire us.
Saturday 7th November - Transforming Anger
This retreat day will focus on looking deeply into our roots of anger and irritation. We might be surprised at what we find there. We might be moved and find our anger melts away so that we find new energy to face the world. Anger is energy, wasted energy that could be harnessed. We can use this energy to build a Pure Land
Tuesday 1st December Towards a better world - Creating a Pure Land
We can all help build a better world especially when we come together. Dharmakara, who became Amida Buddha vowed to create a Pureland where all can be enlightened, without discrimination. How can we contribute to this world? In our wonderful diversity we can all bring many good things into this world. When we share our visions we can find a bigger one and share the joy that comes with it.
2010
Saturday 30th January Responses to Affliction
We need not fall totally back into old responses. We can be creative and in this retreat we will share our experiences and see how we add onto our suffering by building the “wall of self”. Together we can see how our thoughts and ways create our worlds and so can start to do things differently and walk a path towards a better world.
Saturday 20th February - Facing Fear
Fear can rule our lives. Fear also underlies many if not most of our actions. During this retreat we will look deeply at the fears we hold and how our thoughts and actions follow them and limit our lives. In doing so we may be able to start to go beyond some of them, see others in a new light and find new energy. We can then put this energy to use to benefit others.
Saturday 13th March – Happiness
There is affliction in this world and we react to our afflictions. However our impulses are nothing to be ashamed of. We can use the energy normally lost in our habitual reactions to walk a wiser path and create a better world where happiness reigns. In this retreat we will explore how we can do this in our own lives.
Saturday 10th April – Disappointment
How can we not only live with disappointment but also come to appreciate it as part of our spiritual growth? Things all so often do not work out as we planned and frustration can overwhelm us. In this retreat we will explore our reactions and see that often the initial disappointment has led to new doors opening in our lives. But first we have to live with the feelings that come up and face reality.
Saturday 8th May Opening our hearts
We call Namo Amida Bu. What does this mean? At a simple level it means opening our heart to all that is measureless. How does this calling help us in our daily lives to open up to the realities of life and find measureless and creative responses? These questions and more will be with us as we reflect and share.
Sunday 20th June GIVING AND RECEIVING
We see the afflictions in the world and try to “help”. However, sometimes we are burnt up from too much giving and on the other hand, at the same time can feel we are not doing enough This gentle retreat will explore this dilemma.
Saturday 24th July Crisis as Opportunity - Working with Stress
How can we make this transition? Life can seem overpowering and through this we either can burn out trying to do too much, or draw back in different ways from life. Yet at the point of crisis or at our acknowledgement of the reality of our lives there is a chance to do things differently. The big thing is seeing our lives from another perspective and finding a different vision. Exploring with others away from our daily hubble–bubble can help. This gentle retreat will provide space to explore, and is suitable for all people.
Time: 10am – 4pm
Venue: Amida London Buddhist Centre Sukhavati, 21 Sussex Way, Finsbury Park, London N7 6RT

London Insight Meditation presents Stop and Look: A Buddhist Response to the Dilemma of Being Human
Stephen Batchelor in conversation with Madeleine Bunting
Monday, April 20 at 7pm ( Doors open 6.30pm)
The Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, 108 Stamford Street South Bank, London SE1 9NH (Map)
Info : www.londoninsightmeditation.org.uk
This unique event sees best-selling Buddhist author Stephen Batchelor in conversation with award-winning Guardian columnist Madeleine Bunting for a fascinating discussion on the relevance of Buddhism in our world today.
Stephen is a central pioneer in the establishment of Western Buddhism and he will use his own unique personal journey to bring to life the relevance of the Buddha¹s radical teaching for those seeking spiritual direction in a modern, secular society.
Stephen Batchelor left England for India in 1972 to study Buddhism and trained as a monk in both the Tibetan and Zen traditions, he has translated and authored several books, including the bestselling ³Buddhism without Beliefs² (Bloomsbury). Widely renowned as a leading teacher and interpreter of Buddhism, Stephen proposes an atheistic understanding of what the Buddha taught. Earning both condemnation as a heretic and praise as a reformer he argues that Buddhism is a radical awakening to life rather than a system of religious belief.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS TAKE PART IN FORUM ON BUDDHISM AND THE ARTS AT THE V&A
Hochhauser Auditorium, Sackler Centre V&A Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL
Saturday 25 April 2009 14:00 - 17:00, following a 13:00 preview of the Gallery
Book online www.vam.ac.uk
Ticket prices: £20, Concessions £15
As part of The Many Faces of Buddhism, a season of arts and cultural events presented in London by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, artists from around the world will take part in an international forum at the V&A on Saturday 25 April 2009.
The forum will bring together four distinguished international artists: Lin Hwai Min, choreographer and founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in Taiwan; Meredith Monk, internationally acclaimed composer, singer and choreographer of new opera; Sanford Biggers, multi-media African-American artist who fuses aspects of Buddhism with global pop culture; and Kimsooja, South Korean artist who addresses issues of the displaced self through performance, video and installation.
Each of the four panellists will explore the role of Buddhism in contemporary art, and discuss how the teachings of the Buddha have been a resource of inspiration for them in their own work. They will address questions of how spirituality and creativity inspire and inform one another as well as the potential of applying Buddhist theories to the teaching and presentation of art.
Independent scholar and Director Emeritus of the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Jacquelynn Baas will lead an audience response and discussion session to conclude the forum.
The platform will provide a space for artists who have thought deeply about Buddhism and the art experience to express and share their views. It will also help stimulate new debate on the influences of Asian and Buddhist worldviews within the art of the modern era.
The Many Faces of Buddhism season running from 25 April to 17 May includes visual arts, dance, film, talks and coincides with the opening of the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Gallery at the V&A, the first gallery for Buddhist sculpture in the UK. The new day-lit gallery will display highlights from the V&A's world-class collection of Buddhist sculpture ranging from monumental Chinese temple sculptures to small portable gilded Buddhas and will include rare pieces which will go on display in the Museum for the first time. Around 50 sculptures created by master craftsmen between AD 200 and 1850 will go on shown in the new gallery to explore how the Buddha has been represented in Asian art. The Gallery will tell the story of the life of the Buddha and the spread of Buddhism from India to the other regions of Asia.

Event name: Easter Retreat with Geshe Tashi: The Practice of Shine or Calm Abiding
Event price: Please see website
Description: Shine is a practice that aims to develop stable, clear attention. That is, the ability to rest the mind on a particular object of attention without being distracted or becoming dull - effortlessly, and at will, for any length of time.
Shine is a path that leads step by step towards focused and balanced attention with profound levels of stability and clarity, and acts as a doorway to unravelling the possibilities and potentials of human consciousness.
“The One Who Knows Reality has said that, prayers, austerities, and such –even if practiced for a long time – are pointless if done with a distracted mind.” (Shantideva)
During this retreat Geshe Tashi will be guiding you through the practice. Students may arrive on Thursday night. The retreat finishes on Monday after lunch. Please book in advance as places will go quickly. |

Event date: 26 April - 10th of May Event times: various times
Event name: Teachings on Thought Transformation and Mind Training with Khensur Rinpoche Jampa Tegchok
Event price: Please check website
Description: Born in 1930, Khensur Jampa Tegchok Rinpoche became a monk at the age of eight. He studied the major Buddhist treatises at Sera Jey Monastic University in Tibet for 14 years, before fleeing his homeland in 1959 after the abortive uprising of the Tibetans against the Communist Chinese occupation of their country. In 1993, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed him as abbott of Sera-je Monastic University in India. He has recently retired from that post.
Khensur Rinpoche Jampa Tegchok is the author of “Transforming Adversity into
Joy and Courage: An Explanation of the Thirty-seven Practices of
Bodhisattvas”, and a commentary on Seven-point Mind Training. Thought Transformation refers to a radical method used in Mahayana Buddhism to turn our minds away from self-centredness and towards altruism.
Khensur Rinpoche will be giving teachings on this very important subject.
Please book in advance.

To Go Beyond: The Essence of Wisdom with Andy Wistreich
Suggested donation: £50 per weekend.
Based on the Heart Sutra, this programme by Andy Wistreich will explore basic guidelines to enable you to realise emptiness. Until we realise emptiness we remain trapped in cyclic existence with all its insecurities, sufferings and fears and the only help we can offer others will be temporary.
Realisation of emptiness is important for everyone because without it we cannot fulfil our potential. It is not easy to realise emptiness, but with effort in study and practice it is within the reach of all motivated human beings. By attending this course you will learn reasonings, meditations and how to concentrate single-pointedly on emptiness as taught by Buddha in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras.
This programme will be taught at Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds over a 2 year period in a series of 12 sessions. Participants are asked to make every effort to attend the full programme, and to engage in a daily (20-30 minute) meditation on the Heart Sutra for the duration of the programme. Serious students who can not attend the full programme are still welcome to attend and are requested to listen to the CDs from the missed sessions.
The teacher, Andy Wistreich, has been studying, teaching and meditating on emptiness for over 25 years. Although he hasn’t personally realised emptiness, he has received very helpful teachings from HH the Dalai Lama, Geshe Wangchen and Geshe Jampa Thekchog on this essential practice, which he will endeavour to share with others during this programme.”
The first session will explore our basic constituents, as described by the Buddha: the five aggregates of form, feelings, discriminations, compositional factors and consciousness. An aggregate being a collection, the Buddha taught that we are nothing other than a collection of collections with no actual core. The elements are earth, water, fire, air and space and these are elements of the form aggregate. They provide a very useful method for analysing how all our experiences of the material world come about. So together, the aggregates and elements are the basis of our being. All notions of self are super-imposed onto this basis. We will explore how this super-imposition takes place, to what extent it reflects reality and to what extent it is fabricated. So the first weekend will introduce the theoretical framework for the entire programme, and the second will enable course participants to learn how to meditate on what they have learned, in order to begin to integrate it with their everyday experience.
PLEASE BOOK IN ADVANCE FOR THIS COURSE : email smile@jamyangleeds.co.uk or telephone 07866 760460

Ken Jones is a co-editor of the annual volume Contemporary Haibun, and contributes regularly to UK haiku magazines, as well as being represented in British and American anthologies. For his contribution to Pilgrim Foxes: Haiku and Haiku Prose, co-authored with Jim Norton and Sean O'Connor, Jones was awarded the Sasakawa Prize for Original Contributions in the Field of Haikai. In 2005 his "Travellers" (in this book) took first place in the annual English Language Haibun Contest. Earlier collections: Arrow of Stones (British Haiku Society, 2002); Stallion's Crag (Iron Press, 2003).
His latest book is Stone Leek's, 28 haiku-style stories about lives and landscapes, love and war. It is a sequel to The Parsley Bed, (reprinting). Jones is a Zen practitioner and teacher of thirty years' standing, and author of books on socially engaged Buddhism. He is the President of the Network of Engaged Buddhists and lives in Ceredigion, Wales, with his Irish wife, Noragh.
Here is what reviewers have said about Ken Jones's previous haibun collections:
- "It is the brilliant storytelling that makes this book memorable ... I expect you've never read a book quite like this one." - Carolyn Hall (Frogpond).
- "A varied, sparkling collection ... Ken Jones has distilled for us here his long life of adventure, struggle, and illumination" - Ratnagarbha (Urthona: Buddhist Arts Journal)
|
 |
- "The impressive scope and indelible prose style of one of the foremost practitioners of the [haibun] genre today ... work that is truly ground breaking"- Jeffrey Woodward (LYNX).
- "He reaches back into history, literature and art for his images, and into Buddhist philosophy for the expression of his compassion ... uniting all these themes there is the wit, the style the insouciance of the writer" - George Marsh (Blithe Spirit).
- "Ken Jones's poems and prose distil a clear, unsentimental light on his childhood and adult life. War-scarred Europe and rural Wales receive the same wry attention, informed by a deeply felt but utterly unpretentious commitment to Zen Buddhism. And between chapters of well-crafted haibun are bursts of exhilarating haiku, sparkling with life and aching with sadness" - Thomas Jones, editor of Urthona, magazine of Buddhism and the arts.
- "One of the chief practitioners of haibun in English today. Count me among his cadre of followers." - Jim Kacian, American haiku poet and publisher.
- "The last section [is] a song of farewell to the richness of the world, to Ken Jones's love of people and solitude, and to the comedy of his quest for enlightenment" -Tony Conran, major Welsh poet
- "Distinctively Welsh yet imbued with a wry Zen sensibility" - Nigel Jenkins, prominent Welsh poet.
