If you’d like to join the NBO you can do so online using our new Membership Signup page. This will guide you through the whole process, including applying by post if necessary.
Membership is open to all UK Buddhist groups and individuals who share the NBO’s three aims. These are –
a) To promote fellowship and dialogue between Buddhist organisations.
b) To facilitate cooperation between Buddhists in matters of common interest.
c) To work in harmony with Buddhist and other like minded organisations
Becoming a member of the Network of Buddhist Organisations is a declaration of your confidence in the values promoted by Buddhism. Buddhism is a path of awakening that is open to all, based on enquiry and pragmatism and with a firm emphasis on humanitarian ethics, compassion and well-being. Its ancient practices of mindfulness and meditation are increasingly being used to avoid depression and improve good health.
Buddhist ethics are compatible with contemporary attitudes to fairness, freedom and human rights. Commit to your principles by adding your voice to those already part of the NBO community.
In order to give voice to Buddhist ideas and practices in education, to create a flourishing Buddhist community, to work with other faiths, the media and Parliament, we need to have the backing of as many people as possible. As a member of the NBO, you’ll be at the heart of our activities and campaigns, whether for a high quality and inclusive education system, action to help the environment, human rights and fairness, or a dynamic and flourishing exchange of ideas with others inspired by the path of awakening.
Unlike other UK faiths, Buddhism has no recognised media channels or outlets, no broad web news channels, no newspapers, no radio or TV stations and little or no representation in governmental, interfaith, educational and other civic organisations. Buddhism has little visibility, little sense of community, and virtually no voice. You can help to change this.
The NBO receives no funding from government or outside bodies and employs no paid staff – our administration and campaigning is wholly supported by our members, people like you who share our belief in the great value of promoting the humanitarian ideals and practices of Buddhism.
Whether you practice mindfulness and meditation, are a secular Buddhist, attend one or more Buddhist groups, or consider yourself a long-term member of an Asian Buddhist tradition, join the NBO and help make the UK a place where Buddhist inspired action shines out like a beacon.
If you have any questions about joining the NBO you are welcome to email our Membership Secretary here: membership [at] nbo [dot] org [dot] uk.
